He was rescued by Fingon and Thorondor, but lost his right hand. Soon after the Return of the Noldor to Beleriand, Melkor took Maedhros Fëanor's son by deceit and trickery, and hung him by the wrist from the towers of Thangorodrim above Angband. Sauron was one of these, and the Balrogs lay hid with him in Angband's deepest vaults.Īngband re-entered history when Melkor escaped Valinor with the stolen Silmarils: he chose the ruined fortress as his new capital, and rebuilt the Hells of Iron as a base for the dark reign he intended for the lands of Middle-earth. When the Valar captured Melkor and took him in chains back to Valinor, Angband was largely destroyed and lay in ruins for many thousands of years, although beneath the ruins lay many hidden chambers in which some of Melkor's servants escaped the Valar's assault.
Angband was built near the northwestern shores of the Great Sea in the range of the Iron Mountains, as a first defence against any attack on Melkor's realm from the Valar in Aman. It was commanded from its first construction by Sauron, the chief of Melkor's servants. Melkor built Angband during the Years of the Trees, originally as an outlying fortress and armoury to his great northern citadel at Utumno. The dragon Smaug is said to have escaped the destruction of Angband at the end of the First Age.
It was finally destroyed by the forces of the Valar at the end of the First Age, in the War of Wrath. Utumno was destroyed by the Valar, and Melkor imprisoned in Valinor for three ages, but on his return to Middle-earth, he took Angband as the seat of his power, and raised the towers of Thangorodrim above its gates.Īngband was besieged by the Noldor during the early part of the First Age, but the Siege of Angband was broken at the Dagor Bragollach.

She had not put her full power into motion for most of the First Age, but now in the Second Age it's time for her to do so, and 'redeem' herself.Angband was a mighty fortified citadel originally constructed by Melkor in the earliest days of the world as an outlying fortress to his northern stronghold of Utumno deep inside (and underneath) the Iron Mountains. She has to be a person who saves the world against the new Dark Lord (who happens to be the guy who killed her eldest brother and almost killed her nephew and greatly helped Morgoth in master minding the slaying of her other brothers.) She feels she has to keep her hope high and do not give in to despair ever again. Now Galadriel feels guilty of not helping her kin more, guilty of letting "hopelessness" overcome her so badly, feeling guilty of surviving while almost all of her beloved ones are dead. Her pride wasn't just for herself, but for every good guy who had suffered, especially her brothers who had sacrificed their lives in fighting against Morgoth. Eventually at the end of the First Age she "proudly rejected permission to return" "for all who had fought against" Morgoth. Galadriel didn't ride to help any of her family because she "judged to be hopeless". Her cousin Luthien went to save her brother Finrod, while she still sat in Menegroth. Her eldest brother Finrod "of all her kin the nearest to her heart" was saved by a mortal man, not by Galadriel the greatest surviving Noldo. Eventually Orodreth and his daughter were killed as well. Her nephew Orodreth was almost killed, and guess who saved him? Sons of Feanor whom Galadriel utterly hated. In the First Age her brothers Aegnor and Angrod constantly fought against Angband 24/7, and until their death Galadriel had done nothing to directly help them in this war. Galadriel had lost almost all of her family and friends. "She was the last survivor of the princes and queens who had led the revolting Noldor to Exile in Middle-earth." - RGEO
